on the dot for small ensemble (2019)
4 A.M. on the dot. Every day at precisely this time, the black-capped chickadee begins to sing outside of my window. I stare at the ceiling wondering why this bird won’t let me sleep. The repetition of his two note call draws in his other chickadee friends and they too begin to sing. My imagination kicks into overdrive and I can’t help but transform my morning misery into music.
