Vibrance for alto flute and piano (2018/2019)
I was chatting with a friend of mine a few years ago, she was telling me about the need for more repertoire at a higher difficulty level for the alto flute. I set to work and wrote a piece then, that I would eventually deem a failure. Out of nowhere while I was attending the Strata Festival of New Music in Saskatoon, I began to hear this piece in my head. When I returned to Vancouver, I sat at my desk and notated the initial concept.
Since then, I have sporadically picked this piece up and worked on it in my downtime. The alto flute has a gorgeous range and I am happy to explore its colour fully while challenging the player technically. I am very excited to present the final piece as a birthday gift to the flautist, Mikyla Jensen, whom inspired the original concept a few years ago.
