Warmth for string quartet (2018)

Inspired by the gorgeous St. Roch, the first boat to circumvent the Northwest Passage from Vancouver to Halifax. After visiting the boat at the Maritime Museum in Vancouver, the history of the crew and their lives on the ship permeated my thoughts. I could only imagine the crew resting in the living quarters, the gentle rocking of the boat as it sailed. The tumultuous waters would agitate the boat, dipping the living quarters deep into the ice cold ocean. The furnace that heated the quarters had to be kept low to prevent condensation. I thought about the crew's need for warmth. The warmth of the furnace, of the sun and most importantly, the warmth of their families.
